Sound is the first and by far most important factor to me. If it doesn't sound like a turkey nothing else matters. That is achieved by a callmaker who knows how to tune a call, nothing else. It doesn't matter how the call was made. If there was a way to consistently make a superior sounding call then every callmaker would use that method. The fact that there are calls being made different ways means there's no magic way to do it. It all comes down to the ability of the callmaker to get the turkey sound out of that call by his tuning.
After sound, to me the next most important factor is ease of play. If the call can easily be played it will be easier to consistently produce the sound.
Finally, and to me the least important, is the finish. Since beauty is in the eye of the beholder, that is an individual decision. Pick the one you like once you make sure it has turkey in it and you can consistently get that sound out of it.
The toms will definitely be more interested in how it sounds than how it was made or what it looks like.
