Question with the Ebony's

I got a hint from Rickey that I need to consider Mollucan Ebony on some Sinker I am supposed to be getting. I got a call from Marlin with Gabon Ebony on it. I love the streaked look and sound of Marlin's wood he used on my call. I have never fooled with the Ebonys. Does the Mollucan look like the Gabon(which I love the apperence of), and what are their density charastics as far as using them as lid materails??
Any help and advice is appreciated---heck while I at it---any ideas as to a good source for some too !!!

sorry i did not list the ebony better on the box call but when i write inside the call i get lazy because of the difficulty in writing there. the box call is macassor ebony. do not know if i spelled that correctly. gabon ebony is all black. either makes a good lid however they like different woods on the body of the call. i've had good luck with gabon over holly but i've had great luck with the macassor over many woods. i've also found that with the fiddle call the lids that work on a checkered box do not work on my fiddle box. my favorite lid was walnut on my checkered boxes. i'm still waiting to put a walnut on a fiddle box. i've had some that would have made a good call but not the best so i always ended up putting what i thought was the best lid on the call. i'm sure some of the other ebonies will work also. best of luck. sooner

Thanks sooner---After searching the ebonys I figured out that I had Masscar on the call you built me. That thing is fast getting to be one of my favorites too---thanks. Any suggestions as to someone that has a good supply that will take the time to pull what we are looking for as far as grain directionb goes. Any hint would be appreciated.

i've used alot of macassor and made some bad investments with some. i have my best luck with the stuff that has the marble grain like the butternut box call you have. i've had good luck with some that was almost all brown. once i found some that was mostly light brown with some black marbling that made the best lids i ever had in ebony. i've not had much luck with the quarter sawn distinct grain running down the lid like you would normally want in a lid. i go and pick mine out at kiem lumber in charm ohio. they have a great selection. do not know if you could get them to help you out or not. hope this helps. sooner
