Call Woods

Ok Im new to the site so this topic may have been beat to death already..... What is everybodys preference, exotic woods or domestic woods?? I see a lot of nice looking calls made of exotic wood and I see just as many nice looking calls made from domestic woods.... Just to pick everybodys brain a little bit more, how about laminating??? Whats everyones thoughts on laminated calls..... Ive seen some down right art work that was laminated on this site......

Im a domestic wood guy myself, Walnut being my favorite with cherry in a close second.... Im a fan of laminating as well but I do it differently...... I will have pics of my laminating soon.....

Jason, sounds like you may be talking about pot calls??  Seems those are all over the place and interest also seems to fall on what looks and sounds great, but if yoiur just starting, perhaps some domestic wood makes sense--looking forward to seeing your work and hey, welcome to the Roost!

Sounds good on the laminated pics Jason, if you do it differently, then perhaps you're on to something. From what I 've read and seen from one crafter, the glue was somewhat of a deal, seems it heated up with high temps of turning and started to separate. But I have no idea how he ever worked it out. I have several lam pots and strikers that I like, one with glass playing surface too. Its a real looker, and runs good too. I personally like domestic woods, I like to think that a person is using the woods dearest to him, woods that can be found out the back door. Trees he's watched grow into lumber. Down home American pride lumber, like walnut or poplar, cherry too. Plus like Scott says, domestics will be the cheapest to start with. I think a lot of exotics are used because call builders want something different, a little edge, for the collectors or the hunter looking for a slightly different sound. Something to sign their name on to make it" theirs". Ones thing for certain, BET you'll have fun making them, whatever woods you choose !!! post those pics soon !!!

Ive been at it quite a while. Just recently partnered up with another guy making calls. Cross Road Game Calls. He has about 12 years in making calls and I have about 16. Not long by any standards but we both have had a lot of fun!!!!! I like Walnut, definitely my favorite for sound and appearance. Whether it has slate glass or crystal it sounds good. Can you guys tell me how to post multiple pictures at once. Im somewhat computer stupid. I can post a pile of pictures of our calls. As for the laminating, I know what you mean about the glue. I ran in to that issue and I worked through it. I actually built my own press for laminating pots. Im gonna build a press to laminate turning blanks. Im not sure how many of you all on here are on FaceBook but I have my own FaceBook page, Jason Powell Hunting Adventures, I post a lot of stuff that I kill on there and I post a lot of call pictures on there. Im gonna attempt to post a mass picture of our calls here in a little while. Primarily Domestic woods I might add......

There's a place for everything out there and some of the exotics just really work well in a call. No getting around that. So I do use them every once in a while. But I like the idea of using American wood for an American Bird! Just seems rite and just to me.

I have never made pot calls.  However, it seems to me that some of the finest playing/sounding calls I have had the pleasure of running and hearing have come from walnut and cherry pots.  Also seems like the guys who know pot calls best tend to stick with those woods as well.  Just my 2 cents worth.---Jason

Can you guys tell me how to post multiple pictures at once.

Jason, what I do is copy the [img] file from Photobucket, Tinypic etc  and paste them into Word.  Add text to them there also.
Copy the next picture and paste in into Word also.  When I have all of the pictures that I want together, I copy the whole thing and then
paste it into my reply here.  If that makes sense to you.
