Rick ....my brother...you nailed it.... ;D blackjack oak it is, from what I've read it's only fit for firewood. It does have some beautiful color to it though. My dad has been asking me about turning that piece since he brought it to me...so...I figured I needed to get on it...  ;D

Kenny,
 We burn a lot of black jack oak. It burns hot, coals well and also works well in a smoker. The heavy bark really puts out the smoke. Sometimes so much we put chicken or turkey in brown paper bags to lessen it. The trumpet looks great though. How's it sound?

 Looking at the bark of the tree it's easy to see how it got it's name. The call sounds just like every call I build. I've yet to build one were the type of wood has made any difference what so ever. In saying that, I've never built one out of any real soft woods though.  That is the only call I've built out of oak, but I have built some out of holly and cherry I guess those are soft compared to the rosewoods and ebonies I usually use.
