any of you artist.....
« on: April 23, 2013, 06:44:17 PM »
out there ever get artist block???  You know, like writers block?  Some days recently I just can't get my artisitc brain and hands to work and somedays my mind just draws blanks instead of art.  Frustrating as heck.  I have always heard of writers getting it but guess anyone can.  I spent close 4 hours oneday trying to sketch up a scene for a carving I'd like and went through paper after paper and killed my eraser.  I said heck on it and went home.  Then about 2 in the morning it came to me, just clicked and I drew it up the next day no prob.  Other days I have had the art drawn up but couldn't carved to save my life and thought I had lost it.---Jason

Jason, sadly it happens more often than I care to admit.  It seems each and every time, all I need to do is walk away as you did..yes it's hard and it also happens to me when tuning calls.  I know my ears are totally saturated, but I can't seem to put the call down.  However, when I do and return smoe days later the pain I experienced always shows me a bit more light in the tunnel and with determination I usually find it and learn a whole lot in the process.

Then, like you may be describing there are times when nothing looks right and everything I draw first looks like crap, or has no flow or balance.  It seems nothing wants to come out when I want it.  This is not unusual for most artists experience the very same thing.  I can be in the oddist of places and ideas come to me and thus I have learned to keep a pad with me at all times to write or sketch my thoughts.

I could really write a lot about this subject..it's interesting in a disturbing sort of way. :P *aah*  Thanks for bringing this up.

I have the same issue.  I believe it happens to most people.  Sometimes the stress and every day distractions of life zap my creativity. I find it better not to force it.  Its best for me to walk away and go do something else. When all else fails i go out for a hike, mountain bike ride or fish to clear my head.  I wish I had better control of my creativity but it doesn't always work out that way.

Do you experience times when you really get into a project and loose track of everything else?  Some days does it just flows effortlessly?

You may enjoy the book "The Artist's Way" by Julia Cameron.  It's all about rediscovering your creative self.

Keep on making art.  You have something to share!

It happens to all of us. I write and do art is several forms and there are times it just isn't happening. I have taken years off and not touched a brush then started back better than I was. I just stopped writing for about 5 months because I was worn out and burnt out, same for painting. Now I have started back and it is fun again, well some days.

If you are trying to force it lay it down and walk away. Go outside, go watch a movie, go do anything that isn't art related and come back to it later. My best ideas tend to pop into my head at times completely unrelated to actually working on a piece.
