Ive down some recording in the woods as well.  I have come to the conclusion which may be "common sense" the farther away from the camera or mic the better the turkey call sounds.  I hate hearing or listening to my calling after a successful morning of filming.  The mic is attached to the camera and the camera sits close to me.  When it's this close it just doesnt sound good to me.  Maybe it's my calling that bad who knows, but the turkeys seem to like it once in a while.

I think we all answered the question...You can ask 100 turkey hunters what they like in a call and you will get 100 different answers..Thats why we all are ADDICTED!!! ...Playing and tuning calls outside is key IMO, it makes all the difference in the true sound of your call...I think most callmakers have "Their" sound...the way they want their call to play,of course there will be variances in wood choice, but the consistency in the callmakers sound is a huge aspect of learning to tune and what to do to the call to make it what you want..JMHO...

I know the sound I want in a call, and I like alot of differant calls. (To me,) my calls all sound very good and sound just like a turkey. BUT I think it has alot to do with the mood a turkey is in, and the setup I have when it comes to calling it in, with the setup being the most important. Sometimes no matter how good a call sounds turkeys just will not resopnd and other times they will blow a call out of your hand or mouth when you make a call. I have made calls that sounded so good to me and got nonthing. I have also made calls and would think that it would run every turkey on the mountain away and one would gobble back at it. As hunters and call makers, our calls sound good to us and we know what we like and want to hear from a call but, I often wonder how a trukey hears the sound, what does it sound like to him or her. That is a question we will never know for sure because we are not trukeys. One thing I have found out through the years, if a trukey call makes my ear drums viberate, it will call in a turkey. Might sound dumb but it is true. No one knows everything about turkeys and that is what keeps us going back. I do think alot of us hunters, and call makers is darn close to the sound a turkey wants to hear, because alot of trukeys are called in and killed each year. As far as telling someone what soud to look for in a call, if YOU like it, thin that is the call to use. Alot of good sounding turkey calls out there.
