Scoring spurs

How do you all score your birds spurs?  Do you measure them straight across a tape measure or do you give them the credit for the outside curve as well?  Like scoring a B&C whitetail.

The correct way is the outside curve just like an antler measurement. A more accurate way would be a string stretched along the longest curve and mark or cut it where the spur meets the skin then stretch it out along a tape or ruler for measurement.

That is how I have always scored my spurs, it just came up in a discussion with some new turkey hunters.  They were measuring straight and not the outside curve.  I just kept the same habits for scoring deer and turkey.

That's good to know. I guess I've been short'n mine a little. Reckon that'd add another 1/2"

NWTF Guidelines for their scoring system:


Step 2:
Measure each spur. Spurs must be measured along the outside center, from the point at which the spur protrudes from the scaled leg skin to the tip of the spur. Add both spur measurements and multiply the combined length of the spurs by 10. This is the number of points you receive for the turkey’s spurs.
