I sure appreciate the compliments, guys. Like a lot of you, I am a big fan of John Wayne. So, it was a lot of fun to combine a couple of things I love...calls, turkey hunting and the Duke.
It's hard to make a mistake in scrimshaw like this, even with a portrait, when you do it dot by dot. You just have to be dumb enough to sit there making dots for months on end, which I am. Some days I'd spend 6 hours making dots, and my wife would come along and ask "What did you do to it today?" Slooooowwwwww going:).
Just got back from hunting down in Alexander County in S. Illinois. Three guys (including my 76 year old dad). Three birds. They were pretty henned up, but we managed to coax a few in over the course of 4 days. It was just great to be in the woods. Used a couple pots I made to do the calling, which made it great fun, as you guys know. But...I ended up making carbon strikers for slate calls. I loved them. Interested in what you guys think. I couldn't get a wood striker to sound nearly as good. But probably speaks to my striker making abilities.
Thanks again.
Mike
