Old Lynch - Question?????
« on: April 09, 2012, 07:11:46 PM »
Well, my Dad pulled out my great-father's old Lynch call today.  He offered to let me take it home with me if I took care of it, and I would like to share it with y'all.  I would also like to find something nice to keep it in (or I might make a shadow-box).  I was wondering if any of you have information on this box, as I haven't found much about it online.  I read about the "turkey in the pines" call, but this one doesn't have turkey imprints.  It also has two very cool little piston springs (see 5th picture) on each side of the screw.  I guess those were too pricey, so he switched to rubber bands, lol.  Any help would be appreciated.

Great Lynch box call! As you probably have already noticed, it has a couple of valves (similar to tire air valves) next to the screw and spring. Most boxes of this stlye, no longer have these. I guess, most were taken out an lost. This call is post Homewood Alabama style, but retains the Homewood style sound chamber (note the dual cuts at both front and back center of body). A fine additon to any Lynch collection.

Thanks for sharing, love seeing pictures of early Lynch calls, and it is especially great when they get passed down for generations. I am sure you know better than to try to clean it up, just put it in a safe place.  RkLu

One interesting note about your call is that one side is mahogany and the other side is walnut . M.L. 's final design for the World Champion is all mahogany for the body . Nice old call , take it out hunting but be careful they are easy to squash if you sit down wrong !

Thanks for the info. Bill!  Any idea as to the year it was made?  I'm guessing it was before the "tukey in the pines" call.  The only thing I've found that was even close to a description like this call was on a priceguide at http://www.wildturkeyzone.com/turkeycalls/PriceGuide/priceguidel.htm, and it listed that one at $1900!  Mine is flat-sided, from Birmingham, and has four holes in the lid.  Do you think this is the same one?

You know, I thought the sides looked like different types of wood!  Me not being experts like most of you in the wood ID field, I wasn't sure.  I don't think I can take this one out in the woods, although I would like to.  It definitely would be cool to take a gobbler in the same woods as my great-grandfather, with the same call!  It's just too pristine for me to risk messing it up, IMO.  I mean, there's hardly a scratch on it; it looks better than most of my calls,  *lol*.  There's another Birmingham one and some MS ones up at the hunting camp (AKA, my g-grandfather's old home), so maybe I'll try with one of those.

The only cleaning I did (after I took the pictures) was wipe off a couple mud spots with a dampened paper towel.  I also wiped-off the little white specks of chalk from the side that you can see in the pictures and some of the blue chalk on the paddle with a dry towel (I think my dad or grandfather added the blue chalk, at some point).

There is also some writing on the inside of the box.  And as Bill implied, those "dual cuts at both front and back center of body" run all the way down the bottom inside of the sound chamber.  I guess that's where he got the idea for the raised sides.  I'll try to make time to take some pictures of the inside and post them tonight.

Thanks,
Gaines

I would guess it is the same call, but I would also guess it doesn't have the valves in it. There was one on Ebay over a year ago, like yours. I think that one sold for $1500.00 +.  I have sevral like yours and I wouldn't let one go for less than the one on the link you provided. I think the time frame for this call is around 48/49. The TP showed up in the early 50's.

Bill

I added some pictures of two Homewood calls in my collection, as reference material for this thread.

This sequence of pictures show a Homewood and carrying case.

These two pictures are of a second Homewood. This call is a very early example.

Wow, Bill, those are AWESOME!  Thanks for the additional info.  Now I need to make sure there isn't a Homewood one sitting around somewhere,  *lol*
