Good Turkey Hunting book rec wanted
« on: March 25, 2012, 05:07:31 PM »
I would like some recs on a good book of Turkey Hunting tactics and tips. I hunt Easterns in Alabama so something with Southern flavor about chasing birds in the woods and up and down hills would be good.

Thanks in advance

Not so much a how to book, but East of The Slash is one of my favorites.

I'm a third of the way through "The American Wild Turkey" by Henry E. Davis. So far I have found it a good read.

Dont know so much if it has a southern feel albeit alot of it takes place in the hills of the Ozarks.. I recommend Ray Eye's new book "Turkey Hunters Bible".. It adds some of Rays gift as a storyteller from the past and the present.. But also provides his perspective on many of today's myths about the wild turkey and its hunting.. Some may not like his views on these theories because it narrows down the bag of excuses, but definitely provides credible evidence to open some eyes..

All mentioned are excellent books. I would 2nd "The Old Pro Turkey Hunter". Excellent book. "East of the Slash" another really good one.  Just some thought for info and interesting reading...Careful tho...collecting turkey hunting books is almost as bad as collecting calls. *wha*

John McDaniel  "Spring Turkey Hunting"  or "Spring Turkey Hunters Book"  These are more of HOW TO kinda books

Frank Hannenkrats  "Education of a Turkey Hunter"  Stories with lessons to be learned

Bobby Dale  "Double Gobble"  Set in deep south and full of stories and lessons. Lot of old south tradition in it.

Ray Eyes books are really good.

Some of the collections of Archibald Rutledge are excellent reading.

This is just the tip of the iceberg so to speak. You mite want to contact Jim Cassada, he has a pile of titles and available and mite make a suggestion or 2.  But beware, some of these books have been out of print a while and can be $$.
